Connect License Ninja to Claude, ChatGPT, or Copilot

Ask your AI assistant about a customer's licensing position, inventory and projects. Every number comes from License Ninja's rules engine, and the assistant only sees what you can see.

Server URL

https://www.license.ninja/api/mcp

You need a License Ninja account in an organization with an active subscription or trial. If you belong to more than one organization, select the one you want in License Ninja first: each connection works with one organization.

Add the connector

Claude

  1. Open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector (or pick License Ninja from the directory once it's listed).
  2. Paste the server URL and save. No client ID or secret is needed.
  3. Choose Connect. Claude opens License Ninja so you can sign in and approve.

ChatGPT

  1. Open Settings → Apps & Connectors and create a connector (or pick License Ninja from the apps directory once it's listed).
  2. Paste the server URL and choose OAuth as the authentication method.
  3. Connect, then sign in to License Ninja and approve when asked.

Microsoft Copilot Studio

  1. In your agent, open Tools → Add a tool → Model Context Protocol.
  2. Paste the server URL, choose OAuth 2.0, then Dynamic discovery. Copilot registers itself; there's nothing to copy from License Ninja.
  3. Create the connection and sign in to License Ninja. Publish the agent to Microsoft 365 Copilot or Teams as usual.

Menu names change between releases; if yours differ, look for custom connectors or MCP servers in your assistant's settings.

Sign in and approve

  1. Your assistant opens License Ninja. Sign in the way you normally do: email, Google or your company's SSO.
  2. The approval screen names the assistant, the organization and what it will be able to do. Choose Allow to finish, or Deny to stop.
  3. You're sent back to your assistant, connected.

Read-only by default

Default

Every new connection can only read: tenants, inventory, licences, projects and compliance. Approving the connection never grants changes, even if the assistant asks for them.

To let a connection make changes, an organization owner or admin opens Organization → AI agents in License Ninja and switches on what it may do. Changes take effect immediately; the assistant doesn't need to reconnect.

What each switch allows

Writes still need your tenant admin role, exactly as in the app.

Stage projectsprojects:write
Save planned changes as projects, approve or reject them, and draft purchases.
Change inventorytenants:write
Apply projects to real inventory, record or correct servers, decommission hardware, and record purchased licences.
Audit evidenceaudit:write
Freeze signed compliance snapshots and export audit packs.

Safeguards

  • The assistant acts as you, so it only reaches tenants you can access.
  • Applying a project or decommissioning servers takes two steps: the assistant shows you a summary and only goes ahead after you confirm.
  • Every change an assistant makes is recorded in the audit log as agent activity.
  • Disconnect any time from Organization → AI agents. Access ends straight away, and also ends if the organization's subscription lapses.
